Server crashes, computer hacks, email loss and other data malfunctions are common occurrences and yet there are no adequate preventive measures or solutions. Today, in this growing cyber space, it’s very important to have a business continuity and a disaster recovery plan. Seeing the potential market for this, John created an easy website and email backup service, Dropmysite / Dropmyemail.
Dropmysite & Dropmyemail are free services that let you backup your website & emails automatically and easily. Founder, CEO and serial entrepreneur, John Fearon, started Dropmysite in September 2011 with the aim to backup the Internet. Dropmysite is John’s 2nd digital/cloud start-up in two years; his first was EatAds, an outdoor advertising platform.
The inspiration for the backup business arose from the aftermath of a business disaster when an unexpected server crash at EatAds wiped out vital data from the website.
John turned this adversity into an opportunity. He realized that server crashes are common occurrences and yet there were no adequate preventive measures or solutions. Seeing the potential market for this, John created an easy website backup service, Dropmysite.
When things started to take off for Dropmysite, John received inspiration to expand on the backup business. First, a client asked if he could backup emails as well. Second, John heard from Adeo Ressi of TheFunded, “I backup my computer data, why not backup my emails?” Realizing the immensity of the email market, John pivoted to create a straightforward email backup service, Dropmyemail. Now all across the world, users of email have a simple and elegant email backup solution in the cloud.
On the 1st of March 2012, Dropmyemail was launched to much fanfare at DemoAsia ‘12, a launch pad for emerging technology in Asia. At the event, Dropmyemail won the “DemoGuru” award from the judges and “Freedom” award from SGEntrepreneurs.
All good things come at a price and so does these backup services. However, they do offer a free 15 day trial period, after which, users would be able to decide how much storage backup is needed for themselves and pick the best plan to upgrade to. The website backup plans start at $19.99/year for a 10GB backup and the email backup plans start at $9.99/year for a 5GB backup.
Within days, the coveted hockey stick growth kicked in and in 50 days, Dropmyemail announced user base of 525,000. Dropmyemail has been one of the fastest growing backup ventures. At one point in time it was growing faster than Dropbox, Fab.com, Pinterest.
Today, Dropmysite Pte Ltd has featured on CNBC, Wall Street Journal, Venture Beat and more. Dropmysite / Dropmyemail has almost 1 million signups, offices in 4 countries (Dallas, Texas, US / Mumbai, India / Buenos Aires, Argentina / Singapore) and the website is translated into 8 languages.
“With a global market demanding website and email backups, the business will continue to scale up towards the goal of backing up the Internet”, envisions the dropmysite team
