ShoppingWish.in, a price comparison and product discovery portal announced the launch of Scandid – a fast and convenient barcode scanning based price comparison mobile app, designed exclusively for the Indian market. Scandid is the first app in India whereby users can scan the barcode present on the product box or search by product name and instantly get prices and coupons for millions of products across 200+ online retailers in India. In addition, if you are unable to find your product you can simply submit the product details for which you also will be rewarded!
Having the ability to compare prices on the go allows shoppers to make effective purchase decisions quickly. Furthermore when shopping at local stores or malls, shoppers can also show lower online price on their app and ask the salesman for price match. Price matching trend (in the form of offering lower price or freebies) is on the rise as local retailers compete aggressively against online retailers that often have cheaper prices. Scandid also allows for sharing of hot deals or great products through different social networking platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and more. The app supports all UPC, EAN and ISBN barcode formats. iOS version of the app is also under development and will be released in the next few weeks.
Barcode scanning for shopping is very popular in US and Europe markets with apps like Shopsavvy and RedLaser having download numbers in tens of millions. Shoppingwish is bringing the concept to India with Scandid and hopes to help shoppers by empowering them with a tool that can help them get the best deal no matter where they choose to shop – online or offline.
ShoppingWish was founded by Madhur Khandelwal & Sushi Choudhari. Madhur Khandelwal formerly worked with Microsoft and was a part of founding team at TheFind.com, one of the largest shopping search engines in the US. Sushil Choudhari was in the past a cofounder of Dhingana, a popular music-streaming site in India.
This duo had been passionately helping their friends find the best deals when it came to shopping, be it online or offline retail. And then they finally decided to take this hobby to the next level, so that more people could benefit from the service. Madhur adds, “People have questions regarding reliability of stores, warranty, delivery times, where to find coupons etc. At the same time with offline retail also booming in India, people have plenty of choices when shopping. We thought it would be cool to take our hobby to the next level and build a service that could be useful to many more people outside of our circle of friends. So we decided to take the plunge and start Shoppingwish, with the goal of creating a personal shopping assistant.”
Shoppingwish website has been running with very good traction since past 1.5 years. But to really fulfill the promise of providing a personal shopping assistant, having presence on mobile was absolutely necessary. And thats when they started looking at what would be the most useful and innovative way of getting shopping help on your mobile phone, which then gave birth to Scandid – India’s first barcode scanning based price comparison and coupons app.
Scandid covers the use case of finding best deals and coupons today. There are many more scenarios the startup wishes to address in the near future like finding nearby stores, getting suggestions from your friends while making purchase decisions, finding local offers.. just to name a few. In addition to the new features, an iOS Scandid app is alrrady in works thatcan be expected to come out in the next few weeks
