TEDxHyderabad, The Inception Story that paved way to something more!
American biologist Leroy Hood truly said “Don’t underestimate the power of your vision to change the world. Whether that world is your office, your community, an industry or a global movement, you need to have a core belief that what you contribute can fundamentally change the paradigm or way of thinking about problems”
Little did the TEDxHyderabad Curator and TED Senior Fellow, Dr. Anthony Vipin Das, realize the power of this statement when he started putting together a group of people to build the TEDxHyderabad flagship brand. Vipin was inspired by Jay Herratti, Director of TEDx to begin the creation of a wonderful TEDx community in our beautiful city of Hyderabad.
Vipin applied for the license of the TEDxHyderabad 2015 event and that is how this journey began. Sometime towards the end of last year, through social media channels, he reached out to a diverse set of people, who volunteered to come aboard TEDxHyderabad. This set the ball rolling and a plan for the entire year’s schedule was rolled out in the early part of this year. This schedule included organizing TEDxHyderabadLive – a live streaming of talks as they happen, the TEDxHyderabadWomen – an interactive session with live talks from the main TEDWomen event, TEDxHyderabad 2015 – a flagship speaker event and a planned TEDxHyderabadYouth targeted at a younger teen audience.
The first two events – TEDxHyderabadLive and TEDxHyderabadWomen were successful and received rave reviews. As a result people from all walks of life came together and some great networking opportunities were generated and the team structure started to take shape. License holder and organizer of TEDxHyderabadWomen, Ekta, felt that the success of the women’s event showed that the eco-system was ripe for more integration.
Next in line is the TEDxHyderabad 2015, an independently organized TED event happening on September 20, 2015 in Hyderabad. It is a full-day event with a carefully curated audience of 500 people. We have 13 confirmed speakers (Indian and International) from all walks of life and represent diverse backgrounds from Art, Music, Photography, Space Exploration, Education, Philanthropy, Technology and Agriculture.
In order to create an impact, it was necessary to bring together a group of people that shared a similar outlook. This would help form a harmonious environment and out of harmony comes beauty. Whenever a compatible group comes together and decides to make a difference, it needs a community to encourage and back it. When a like minded community brings together its might, then stories are created. This was followed by the idea to build a community and a networking platform for greater good. The desire to create something sustainable and not just be a one event group, drove the TEDxHyderabad 2015 team to realize that we can do more, in order to extend beyond this event.
The idea was now to be able to mobilize this community’s enthusiasm and leverage its passions to begin work on a relevant social problem. The group realized very early on that a worthy social movement canonly be created collectively if it were to be sustainable in nature. Thus SAHE(Society for Advancement of Human Endeavour, pronounced SAHI, the Hindi word for correct), was born. Therefore, core member of SAHE, Viiveck Verma, feels one has to be careful while selecting the cause, as it has to be driven by what people feel very strongly about, what affects them and what will kindle their minds.
The journey from TEDxHyderabad to SAHE has been one full of learnings, for the entire team, where they stumbled across many amazing, inspirational people and their stories one after the other. The birth of SAHE is that first step in the evolution of this unit that takes this group, event and its attendees to the next level.Members of SAHE aspire to make it a society which will garner the necessary support needed to create a sustainable model of philanthropy and entrepreneurship, while being supported by this multifaceted and multitalented community of people across Hyderabad city.
